Stopień doktora chemii uzyskał na Uniwersytecie w Berlinie w grupie Hermanna Fischera. Od 1916 do 1945 pracował na Uniwersytecie w Kilonii. W 1950 roku został uhonorowany nagrodą Nobla wraz ze swoim wcześniejszym studentem Kurtem Alderem za odkrycie i opracowanie metody syntezy dienów, zwanej reakcją Dielsa-Aldera. Wikipedia
