Zanurzona w mroku i grozie, mocno religijna twórczość Hawthorne’a ogniskowała się wokół problematyki grzechu pierworodnego, tudzież losów bohaterów uwikłanych w rozpaczliwe konflikty winy i odkupienia. Niektórzy badacze mówią wręcz o „obsesji grzechu” u autora Szkarłatnej litery.
