Były koordynator Projektu Debian GNU/Linux, główny autor Definicji Otwartego Źródła , założyciel Software in the Public Interest, twórca projektu UserLinux i współzałożyciel Open Source Initiative . Perens napisał także cykl książek wydanych przez Prentice Hall PTR pod tytułem Bruce Perens' Open Source Series.
