„Wounded Knee [w 1973] było historyczną cezurą w stosunkach amerykańskich Indian i narodów zachodnioeuropejskich. Było pierwszym wygranym protestem współczesnych narodów tubylczych przeciwko zachodnioeuropejskiej interpretacji historii, bowiem Siuksowie odrzucili definicje, których amerykański system prawny używał do skrywania statusu indiańskich plemion, kreując je jedynie na nieistotny problem wewnętrzny USA. W swojej deklaracji niepodległości Siuksowie Oglala mówili światu o wolności wszystkich rdzennych ludów od tyranii zachodnioeuropejskiej myśli, wartości i interpretacji doświadczeń człowieka. Wounded Knee oznaczało, że Indianie byli zdecydowani poszukiwać swojego miejsca w świecie, że ogłosili swoje wyzwolenie – jeśli nie fizyczne, to duchowe – od przeszłości i że wkraczają oto przed światem w nową fazę istnienia, której dotąd im odmawiano. Widok, jak małe indiańskie plemię usiłuje zrzucić więzy kolonializmu i stać się wolnym narodem fascynował europejskich dziennikarzy, którzy odwiedzali USA i przybywali do Wounded Knee.”

Religion is for those who are afraid of going to hell. Spirituality is for those who know they have been there — perhaps through involvement with religion.
The next variant located is ascribed to an anonymous member of Alcoholics Anonymous in Illuminating the Heart: Steps Toward a More Spiritual Marriage (1996) by Barbara G. Markway, p. 28:
