Jeden z najważniejszych, najbardziej wpływowych i zarazem najbardziej kontrowersyjnych pisarzy XX wieku, prekursor egzystencjalizmu w literaturze, porównywany nieraz do Markiza de Sade. Z wykształcenia lekarz, co znalazło odzwierciedlenie w percepcji świata w jego powieściach. Innowator języka literackiego, który wzbogacił o argot i specyfikę języka mówionego, wyzwolonego ze składni francuskiej. Znany zwłaszcza dzięki skandalizującej powieści Podróż do kresu nocy, określanej przez Jerzego Stempowskiego jako powieść bez estetyzmu. Wyróżniał się ostrym, prowokacyjnym stylem obfitującym w wulgaryzmy, pełnym ironii, satyry i czarnego humoru. Uznany za jednego z największych pisarzy opisujących kondycję człowieka XX wieku.
