Studiował na École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts w Paryżu.

W swej rzeźbiarskiej działalności Maillol odrzucał dziewiętnastowieczne tendencje do tworzenia literackich, psychologicznych czy rodzajowych dzieł, skupiał się na tektonice, syntetyczności figur, którymi są zazwyczaj pojedyncze postacie, sprawiające wrażenie monumentalności, elegancji i prostoty.
