Mohandász Karamcsand Gandhi, híveitől kapott tiszteletnevén Mahátma Gandhi jogász, politikus. India politikai és spirituális vezetője, az indiai függetlenségi mozgalom vezéralakja.
A Gandhi gudzsaráti kasztnév: banija, vagyis a kereskedők egyik kasztjába tartozott. Maga a család fűszerkereskedő volt. Későbbi nevét híveitől kapta; a Mahátma szanszkrit szó, jelentése: „nagy lélek”. Ezen a néven ismeri őt az egész világ, s vált a békés ellenállás jelképévé.
