Satires (1716)
Marco Bozzaris in memory of the Greek revolutionary hero Markos Botsaris.
“Thy name is Hasty-Pudding! thus our sires
Were wont to greet thee fuming from the fires.”
Canto 1: st. 8 & st. 9, lines 1–12
The Hasty-Pudding (1793)
Context: But here tho' distant from our native shore,
With mutual glee we meet and laugh once more,
The same! I know thee by that yellow face,
That strong complexion of true Indian race,
Which time can never change, nor soil impair,
Nor Alpine snows, nor Turkey's morbid air;
For endless years, thro' every mild domain,
Where grows the maize, there thou art sure to reign.
But man, more fickle, the bold license claims,
In different realms to give thee different names.
Thee soft nations round the warm Levant
Palanta call, the French of course Polante;
E'en in thy native regions, how I blush
To hear the Pennsylvanians call thee Mush!
On Hudson's banks, while men of Belgic spawn
Insult and eat thee by the name suppawn.
All spurious appellations, void of truth:
I've better known thee from my earliest youth,
Thy name is Hasty-Pudding! thus our sires
Were wont to greet thee fuming from the fires.

Day of Affirmation Address (1966)
Context: Only earthbound man still clings to the dark and poisoning superstition that his world is bounded by the nearest hill, his universe ends at river shore, his common humanity is enclosed in the tight circle of those who share his town or his views and the color of his skin. It is — It is your job, the task of young people in this world, to strip the last remnants of that ancient, cruel belief from the civilization of man.
“I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that.”
As quoted in The Daily Telegraph (2 March 1988)
On The Late Show with David Letterman (1994)
“It is your concern when your neighbor's wall is on fire.”
Nam tua res agitur, paries cum proximus ardet.
Book I, epistle xviii, line 84
