Thomas Hobbes – angielski filozof, myśliciel społeczny, twórca kontraktualizmu, autor dzieła Lewiatan , traktatu z zakresu filozofii społecznej i filozofii politycznej, w którym dowodzi, że człowiek wyszedł z hipotetycznego stanu natury, czyli stanu wojny każdego z każdym szukając gwarancji swojego bezpieczeństwa. Według Hobbesa człowiek decyduje się na utworzenie państwa na skutek w pełni racjonalnej i jednocześnie egoistycznej kalkulacji. Wszyscy tworzący państwo oddają większość władzy i jednocześnie zrzekają się prawa do używania przemocy na rzecz suwerena, w ramach powszechnej umowy społecznej. Czynią tak w zamian za identyczną obietnicę ze strony innych ludzi tworzących społeczeństwo i celem uzyskania przez wszystkich bezpieczeństwa.

Jego wszystkie dzieła umieszczone zostały w index librorum prohibitorum dekretami z lat 1649, 1701, 1703. Wikipedia
