Kenneth Patchen Quotes

Kenneth Patchen was an American poet and novelist. He experimented with different forms of writing and incorporated painting, drawing, and jazz music into his works, which have been compared with those of William Blake and Walt Whitman. Patchen's biographer wrote that he "developed in his fabulous fables, love poems, and picture poems a deep yet modern mythology that conveys a sense of compassionate wonder amidst the world's violence." Along with his friend and peer Kenneth Rexroth, he was a central influence on the San Francisco Renaissance and the Beat Generation. Wikipedia

“You, the woman; I, the man; this, the world:
And each is the work of all.”

Kenneth Patchen Quotes

“Have you wondered why all the windows in heaven were
broken?”

Kenneth Patchen

"The Character of Love Seen as a Search for the Lost"
Context: Have you wondered why all the windows in heaven were
broken?
Have you seen the homeless in the grave of God's
hand?
Do you want to acquaint the larks with the fatuous
music of war?

“You, the sought for; I, the seeker; this, the search:
And each is the mission of all.”

Kenneth Patchen

"The Character of Love Seen as a Search for the Lost"
Context: You, the sought for; I, the seeker; this, the search:
And each is the mission of all. For greatness is only the drayhorse that coaxes
The built cart out; and where we go is reason.
But genius is an enormous littleness, a trickling
Of heart that covers alike the hare and the hunter.

“As we are so wonderfully done with each other
We can walk into our separate sleep
on floors of music where the milkwhite cloak of childhood
lies”
