Prometheus
Poems (1851), Prometheus
Context: Now shall I become a common tale,
A ruin'd fragment of a worn-out world;
Unchanging record of unceasing change.
Eternal landmark to the tide of time.
Swift generations, that forget each other,
Shall still keep up the memory of my shame
Till I am grown an unbelieved fable.
“I am endowed by shame's vast memory, more detailed and implacable than any other, a gift unique to shame.”
Quoted in German #MeToo, ed. Elisabeth Krimmer and Patricia Simpson (Boydell & Brewer, 2022), p. 31

Variant: I am Fortune's child,
Not man's; her mother face hath ever smiled
Above me, and my brethren of the sky,
The changing Moons, have changed me low and high.
There is my lineage true, which none shall wrest
From me; who then am I to fear this quest?
