„Wartości muszą istnieć w czyjejś świadomości, jeśli słowo to ma mieć w ogóle jakieś znaczenie, zatem muszą one ze swej istoty być indywidualne. Wartości, o których jest tutaj mowa, nie odnoszą się również do punktu widzenia całej gospodarki, ale tylko jednostki. Jak we wszystkich ocenach fakt społeczny polega tu na tym, że wartości indywidualne są ze sobą związane, a nie są niezależne jedna od drugiej. Całokształt stosunków ekonomicznych tworzy system ekonomiczny, tak jak całokształt stosunków społecznych tworzy społeczeństwo. Chociaż nie można mówić o wartościach społecznych, istnieje jednak społeczny system wartości, społeczny system wartości indywidualnych. Wartości te są ze sobą powiązane, tak, jak wartości w ramach gospodarki indywidualnej. Oddziałują na siebie wzajemnie poprzez stosunki wymienne, tak że wpływają na wszystkie wartości innych jednostek gospodarujących i znajdują się pod ich wpływami.”

„system gospodarczy określa cel (…) produkcji technicznej; technika jedynie rozwija metody produkcji potrzebnych dóbr. Ale rzeczywistość ekonomiczna niekoniecznie musi realizować te metody z wszystkimi ich konsekwencjami i w sposób najbardziej idealny z technicznego punktu widzenia, lecz podporządkowuje tę realizację względom ekonomicznym. Rozbieżność między kombinacjami najlepszymi ekonomicznie a kombinacjami najdoskonalszymi technicznie nie jest nieunikniona, jednakże często istnieje i to nie tylko wskutek ignorancji i indolencji, ale także i z tej przyczyny, że metody gorsze pod względem technicznym mogą jednak być najodpowiedniejsze w danych warunkach ekonomicznych.”

„Proces rozwoju społecznego stanowi niepodzielną całość. Z wielkiego jego strumienia systematyzująca ręka badacza wyodrębnia w sposób sztuczny fakty ekonomiczne. Samo określenie jakiegoś faktu jako faktu ekonomicznego oznacza już jego abstrakcję, pierwszą z wielu narzuconych przez warunki techniczne naszemu myśleniu dążącemu do odtworzenia rzeczywistości. Z takim samym uzasadnieniem można pisać historię literatury, chociaż literatura każdego narodu jest nierozerwalnie związana ze wszystkimi innymi elementami jego życia.”

„Gdy podejmujemy zagadnienie ogólnych form zjawisk ekonomicznych, ich prawidłowości, czy też, gdy usiłujemy znaleźć klucz do ich zrozumienia, oznacza to zarazem że ipso facto traktujemy je jako coś co trzeba odkryć, jako cel poszukiwań, jako „niewiadomą”, którą chcemy sprowadzić do tego, co jest stosunkowo „wiadome”, tak jak to czyni każda nauka z przedmiotem swych badań. Jeśli uda nam się odkryć określony związek przyczynowy między dwoma zjawiskami, problem nasz jest rozwiązany pod warunkiem, że zjawisko, które w związku tym gra rolę „głównej przyczyny”, nie jest zjawiskiem ekonomicznym. Uczyniliśmy wówczas wszystko, co w danym przypadku możemy uczynić jako ekonomiści, a resztę musimy pozostawić innym naukom. Jeśli jednak ta „główna przyczyna” sama, ze swej strony, ma charakter ekonomiczny, wówczas musimy kontynuować nasze badanie, dopóki nie dojdziemy do przyczyny nieekonomicznej.(…) Zadaniem naszym będzie zawsze przedstawić ogólne formy związku przyczynowego, który wiąże fakty ekonomiczne z danymi nieekonomicznymi. Doświadczenie uczy, że jest to możliwe.”
