W marcu 1953, mając 25 lat, wraz z Francisem Crickiem i Rosalind Franklin, opracował w Laboratorium Cavendisha model budowy przestrzennej podwójnej helisy DNA, za co, wraz z Crickiem i Maurice'em Wilkinsem, otrzymał Nagrodę Nobla w dziedzinie fizjologii za rok 1962.
