Thomas Mann német író, a 20. századi német nyelvű irodalom egyik legjelentősebb alakja. Elbeszéléstechnikája a 19. századhoz, elsősorban Tolsztojhoz, illetve Theodor Fontane és Richard Wagner szimbólumaihoz és vezérmotívumaihoz kapcsolódik. Prózájára jellemző az irónia és a kétértelműség, az allegóriákat és mitológiai motívumokat művészileg egyre érettebb módon használta fel. Mellékmondatokkal és betoldásokkal bonyolított elbeszélésmódja ritmusos és kiegyensúlyozott, a beszédstílust a mindenkori tematikához igazította. A jelentéstartalmat a szavak tudatos megválasztásával gazdagította. Első regényéért, az 1900-ban írt, 1901-ben kiadott A Buddenbrook házért 1929-ben irodalmi Nobel-díjjal tüntették ki.
