“Reality, at first glance, is a simple thing: the television speaking to you now is real.”

Alan Moore (1953) English writer primarily known for his work in comic books

What Is Reality?
Context: Reality, at first glance, is a simple thing: the television speaking to you now is real. Your body sunk into that chair in the approach to midnight, a clock ticking at the threshold of awareness. All the endless detail of a solid and material world surrounding you. These things exist. They can be measured with a yardstick, a voltammeter, a weighing scale. These things are real.

“We know you understand that even though people may be well known they still hold in their hearts the emotions of a simple person for the moments that are the most important of those we know on earth — birth, marriage, death.”

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1929–1994) public figure, First Lady to 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy

Press Statement issued the day before her marriage to Aristotle Onassis, NY Times (20 October 1968)
Context: We know you understand that even though people may be well known they still hold in their hearts the emotions of a simple person for the moments that are the most important of those we know on earth — birth, marriage, death. We wish our wedding to be a private moment in the little chapel among the cypresses of Skorpios.

“I told you that your dream was a difficult one. It's the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary; only wise men are able to understand them.”

This has sometimes been paraphrased: "The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them."

“Everyone's childhood plays itself out. No wonder no one knows the other or can completely understand.”

Marilyn Monroe (1926–1962) American actress, model, and singer

Marilyn's personal diaries (1958), as quoted in Fragments (2010), by Stanley Buchthal and Bernard Comment
Context: Everyone's childhood plays itself out. No wonder no one knows the other or can completely understand. By this I don't know if I'm just giving up with this conclusion or resigning myself — or maybe for the first time connecting with reality. How do we know the pain or another's earlier years, let alone all that he drags with him since along the way at best a lot of leeway is needed for the other — yet how much is unhealthy for one to bear. I think to love bravely is the best and accept — as much as one can bear.
