„Wciąż żyjemy w świecie, w którym istnieje potrzeba audiowizualnego wydarzenia. Czuli ją Grecy, Rzymianie, pojawiła się nawet w kościele katolickim. Sztuką, która przez 300 lat z dużym powodzeniem zaspokajała tę potrzebę, była opera. A gdy opera się skończyła, pojawiło się kino. Teraz jest podobnie – kino umiera i będzie zastąpione przez inną formę telewizualną. To właśnie malarstwo powinno stać się początkiem nowego kina. Malarstwo ma olbrzymią siłę, narzuca sposób w jaki patrzymy na świat, postrzegamy krajobrazy, czy kobiece piękno. Słynny szwajcarski malarz Giacometti mówił, że twoja babcia może nie wie nic o Picassie, ale Picasso wie o niej wszystko. Mnóstwo ludzi przejawia olbrzymią ignorancję i myśli, że malarstwo to takie bardzo prywatne, kameralne zajęcie.”

„Zebra i koń nie mogą się parzyć i spłodzić kolejnego zwierzęcia. A kino może się parzyć na prawo i lewo. Nie ma autonomii i jej nie zdobędzie. Już za późno. Bo jest narracyjne. W naturze nie ma czegoś jak narracja. To zjawisko wymyślone przez człowieka, sposób abyśmy mogli się komunikować. Budzimy się rano i rozmawiamy z babcią, kochanką, psem. Najlepsi malarze nie są narracyjni, więc dlaczego kino ma takie być? Myślę, że ludzie, którzy potrzebują narracji, są lękliwi i leniwi. To obraz ma zawsze ostatnie słowo. I teraz następuję wielka rewolucja w społeczeństwie. Dominację tekstu zastępuje dominacja obrazu i musimy się z tym pogodzić. Każdy z nas musi stać się jej częścią, czy tego chce, czy nie.”

„To rodzaj polemiki z tym, jak postrzega się Rembrandta. I może wydaje się to dziwne, ale Nightwatching to bardzo przyjemny film. A uważa się, że moje filmy nie należą do szczególnie rozkosznych. Kluczem do zrozumienia jest symetria. Pierwszych 7 ujęć jest odwróceniem ostatnich 7, podobnie 46 ujęć w środku filmu ma swoje lustrzane odbicie w innych. W filmie jest też 5 leitmotivów, takich jak dywan, dzieci, światło – a mówiąc o świetle, sztucznym świetle, którego Rembrandt był mistrzem, opowiadam o historii kina. „Wszystkie dzieła Eisensteina – i teoretyczne rozprawy, i filmy – świadczą o tym, że był twórcą nietuzinkowym. Moim zdaniem kino przyniosło światu dwie rzeczy: specyficzne spojrzenie – choć przecież i wcześniej taki potencjał miało malarstwo – oraz montaż. Wszystkie inne zmiany, które wniosło kino, są nieistotne. Na dobrą sprawę Martin Scorsese robi takie same filmy jak D. W.
