Jednak najbardziej znane jego powieści to: The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz i Barney’s Version . W The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz Richler opisuje bogaty świat żydowskiej dzielnicy Montrealu , która w latach 30, 40 i 50 ub. wieku była odpowiednikiem warszawskich Nalewek przed 1939 rokiem. Znaleźć tam można szereg poloników wynikających z wielusetletniej tradycji Żydów polskich. Sam pisarz był po kądzieli wnukiem warszawskiego rabina.

Odznaczony nagrodą Orderu Kanady i wieloma nagrodami literackimi. W 1997 za Barney’s Version otrzymał Giller Prize.

Jego trzy powieści doczekały się adaptacji filmowych: The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz w 1974, Joshua then and now w 1985 i Barney’s Version w 2009.

Do roku 2015 w Polsce ukazały się 3 powieści Richlera: „Terminator Duddy Kravitz”, „Niegdyś i dziś” oraz „Wersja Barneya”. Wikipedia
