Harry Norman Turtledove – historyk i autor powieści historycznych, fantasy i science fiction, najbardziej znany z utworów należących do gatunku historii alternatywnej. Jego żoną jest Laura Frankos, pisarka science fiction, siostra pisarza fantasy Stevena Frankosa. Ma trzy córki: Alison, Rachel i Rebeccę. W latach 1986-1987 był skarbnikiem Science Fiction Writers of America.

Turtledove urodził się w Los Angeles w rodzinie żydowskiej. Zaczął studia na Caltech, gdzie oblał pierwszy rok, po czym rozpoczął studia na UCLA, gdzie w 1977 r. zrobił doktorat z historii Bizancjum. W 1979 r. wydał dwie pierwsze powieści, Wereblood i Werenight, pod pseudonimem Eric G. Iverson. Turtledove wyjaśnił później, że jego redaktor uznał, że ludzie nie uwierzą, że "Turtledove" to prawdziwe nazwisko autora i że powinien użyć bardziej nordyckiego nazwiska. Pisał pod nazwiskiem Iverson do roku 1985, kiedy opublikował Herbig-Haro i And So to Bed pod własnym nazwiskiem. Inny z jego wczesnych pseudonimów to Mark Gordian. Turtledove otrzymał Nagrodę HOMera za opublikowane w 1990 r. opowiadanie Designated Hitter, Nagrodę Johna Estena Cooka za Guns of the South i Nagrodę Hugo za Down in the Bottomlands . He hoped the young man had scored a hit. But no sooner had the smile appeared than it vanished. The report of the gun sounded- odd. It had been an abrupt bark, not a pistol shot or the deeper boom of an Enfield rifle musket. Maybe it was a captured Federal weapon. The gun cracked again and again and again. Each report came closer to the one than two heartbeats were to each other. A Federal weapon indeed, Lee thought: one of those fancy repeaters their cavalry like so well. The fusillade went on and on. He frowned at the waste of precious cartridges- no Southern armory could easily duplicate them. He frowned once more, this time in puzzlement, when silence fell. He had automatically kept track of the number of rounds fired. No Northern rifle he knew was a thirty-shooter. He turned his mind back to the letter to President Davis. -Valley, he wrote.
