Wilhelm Röntgen citations

Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen est un physicien allemand, né le 27 mars 1845 à Lennep, aujourd'hui un quartier de Remscheid, Allemagne, et mort le 10 février 1923 à Munich.

Né à Lennep en Allemagne, il fait une grande partie de sa scolarité aux Pays-Bas avant d'entrer à l'École polytechnique fédérale de Zurich. Il est successivement professeur de physique à Strasbourg , à Giessen , à Wurtzbourg et à Munich . Il découvre les rayons X en 1895, ce qui lui vaut de recevoir la médaille Rumford en 1896 et le premier prix Nobel de physique en 1901. Wikipedia

They penetrated paper, wood, and cloth with ease; and the thickness of the substance made no perceptible difference, within reasonable limits. … The rays passed through all the metals tested, with a facility varying, roughly speaking, with the density of the metal. Contexte: I was working with a Crookes tube covered by a shield of black cardboard. A piece of barium platino-cyanide paper lay on the bench there. I had been passing a current through the tube, and I noticed a peculiar black line across the paper. … The effect was one which could only be produced, in ordinary parlance, by the passage of light.
