Theodore von Kármán , né le 11 mai 1881 et décédé le 6 mai 1963, est un ingénieur et physicien hongrois et américain spécialisé en aéronautique dans les années fondatrices de 1940 à 1960. Il fut le premier directeur du Jet Propulsion Laboratory de 1938 à 1944. Il est personnellement responsable de plusieurs avancées cruciales en aérodynamique, en particulier dans les domaines de la caractérisation du flux de l'air supersonique et hypersonique. Wikipedia

November 1957 - Told to Joseph G. Martin, then Aide-de-Camp to Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Hooks, as Lt. Martin escorted Dr. von Kármán from New York City to lead a secret symposium on space flight in Cloudcroft, NM. Sputnik had been launched a month before and every branch of the US military had a separate space program and were desperately trying to get off a successful launch.
