George Monck dit Monk , 1er duc d'Albemarle , Général de la mer , est considéré comme l'homme fort sous Oliver Cromwell, pour qui il mène la répression en Écosse, avant de changer de camp et de contribuer à la restauration du roi Charles II, non sans avoir entretemps purgé l'armée d'une partie des protestants.
Franc-maçon, il fut membre de la loge d'Édimbourg.
Deuxième fils de Sir Thomas Monck, un homme de bonne famille, il est né à Potheridge, près de Torrington, dans le Devonshire. Wikipedia
