Jim Peebles Quotes

Phillip James Edwin Peebles is a Canadian-American astrophysicist, astronomer, and theoretical cosmologist who is currently the Albert Einstein Professor in Science, emeritus, at Princeton University. He is widely regarded as one of the world's leading theoretical cosmologists in the period since 1970, with major theoretical contributions to primordial nucleosynthesis, dark matter, the cosmic microwave background, and structure formation.

Peebles was awarded half of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2019 for his theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology. He shared the prize with Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz for their discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a sun-like star. While much of his work relates to the development of the universe from its first few seconds, he is more skeptical about what we can know about the very beginning, and stated, "It's very unfortunate that one thinks of the beginning whereas in fact, we have no good theory of such a thing as the beginning."Peebles has described himself as a convinced agnostic.

Famous Jim Peebles Quotes

“I don't think there is a final theory of anything. It's theories all the way down.”

[Princeton news conference for James Peeble, winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics, October 8, 2019, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiPZrRcdgfU] (quote at 25:26 of 38:15)

“I have been working in cosmology for 55 years ... I'm the last man standing, so to speak, from those early days.”

as quoted by Kenneth Chang and Megan Specia in: [8 October 2019, Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded for Studies of Earth's Place in the Universe, NY Times, https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/08/science/nobel-physics.html]

“Another somewhat confusing usage is the name "the big bang" for the standard model. It is not appropriate, because it connotes a spatially isolated event, an explosion, that marked the start of everything. ... But the name has a very evident appeal and I expect that people will continue to use it.”
