Jesus, also known as Jesus Christ and Jesus of Nazareth, was a Jewish preacher and religious leader in the first century. He is the central figure of Christianity and is believed by most Christians to be the incarnate Son of God and the messiah prophesied in the Hebrew Bible. Historical evidence confirms his existence, yet there is uncertainty about the reliability of the Gospels in describing his life. Jesus was a Galilean Jew who engaged in debates with fellow Jews, performed miracles, taught through parables, and gained followers. He was arrested by Jewish authorities, turned over to the Roman government, and crucified under Pontius Pilate. After his death, his followers believed he rose from the dead, forming the early Christian Church.

Christian theology teaches that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin named Mary. He performed miracles, founded the Christian Church, died on the cross as a sacrifice for sin, rose from the dead, and ascended into Heaven. The majority of Christians worship him as God's incarnation in human form. Jesus' birth is celebrated on Christmas Day while his crucifixion is honored on Good Friday and resurrection on Easter Sunday. Apart from Christianity, Jesus is also revered in other faiths such as Baha'i, Druze faith, Islam, and Manichaeism.

In terms of identity within his community at that time,"Jesus of Nazareth" or "Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth" were common names used for him. The name Jesus derives from Greek Iesous but has roots in Hebrew names meaning "save" and "salvation". The title "Christ" comes from Greek Χριστός meaning "anointed". It signifies that Jesus was anointed with sacred oil like other holy figures in biblical Judaism. Christians referred to Jesus as "the Christ" because they believed he fulfilled prophecies in their scriptures. The term Christian, derived from Christ, has been in use since the first century.

Gnostic Gospels, Gospel of Thomas (c. 2nd century AD manuscript)

The quote is mistakenly attributed to the author

“All which a man loves, for which he leaves everything else but that, is his god, thus the glutton and drunkard has for his idol his own flesh, the fornicator has for his idol the harlot and the greedy has for his idol silver and gold, and so the same for every other sinner.”

Jesus

Source: Gospel of Barnabas (c. 16th century AD manuscript), Ch. 33. The gospel's origins and author have been debated; several theories are speculative, and none has general acceptance. The Gospel of Barnabas is dated to the 13th to 15th centuries,[2] much too late to have been written by Barnabas (fl. 1st century CE). Many of its teachings are synchronous with those in the Quran and oppose the Bible, especially the New Testament; some, however, contradict the Quran.

“Only Judas has guessed the master aright—and has discerned that he comes from the heavenly realm of the god "Barbelo."”

Jesus

In the realm of Barbelo, it seems, earthly pains are unknown and the fortunate inhabitants are free from the attentions of the God of the Old Testament. Jesus himself is descended in some fashion from Adam&#x27;s third son, Seth. With Judas&#x27; help, he hopes to guide the seed of Seth back to the realm of Barbelo. <br class="br">A paraphrasing of Jesus&#x27; statements in the Judas from &quot; Judas Saves: Why the lost gospel makes sense http://www.slate.com/id/2139781/&quot;.
