Jesus, also known as Jesus Christ and Jesus of Nazareth, was a Jewish preacher and religious leader in the first century. He is the central figure of Christianity and is believed by most Christians to be the incarnate Son of God and the messiah prophesied in the Hebrew Bible. Historical evidence confirms his existence, yet there is uncertainty about the reliability of the Gospels in describing his life. The name Jesus derives from Greek Iesous but has roots in Hebrew names meaning "save" and "salvation". The title "Christ" comes from Greek Χριστός meaning "anointed". It signifies that Jesus was anointed with sacred oil like other holy figures in biblical Judaism. Christians referred to Jesus as "the Christ" because they believed he fulfilled prophecies in their scriptures. The term Christian, derived from Christ, has been in use since the first century.
