Jesus, also known as Jesus Christ and Jesus of Nazareth, was a Jewish preacher and religious leader in the first century. He is the central figure of Christianity and is believed by most Christians to be the incarnate Son of God and the messiah prophesied in the Hebrew Bible. Historical evidence confirms his existence, yet there is uncertainty about the reliability of the Gospels in describing his life. Jesus was a Galilean Jew who engaged in debates with fellow Jews, performed miracles, taught through parables, and gained followers. He was arrested by Jewish authorities, turned over to the Roman government, and crucified under Pontius Pilate. After his death, his followers believed he rose from the dead, forming the early Christian Church.
Christian theology teaches that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin named Mary. He performed miracles, founded the Christian Church, died on the cross as a sacrifice for sin, rose from the dead, and ascended into Heaven. The majority of Christians worship him as God's incarnation in human form. Jesus' birth is celebrated on Christmas Day while his crucifixion is honored on Good Friday and resurrection on Easter Sunday. Apart from Christianity, Jesus is also revered in other faiths such as Baha'i, Druze faith, Islam, and Manichaeism.
In terms of identity within his community at that time,"Jesus of Nazareth" or "Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth" were common names used for him. The name Jesus derives from Greek Iesous but has roots in Hebrew names meaning "save" and "salvation". The title "Christ" comes from Greek Χριστός meaning "anointed". It signifies that Jesus was anointed with sacred oil like other holy figures in biblical Judaism. Christians referred to Jesus as "the Christ" because they believed he fulfilled prophecies in their scriptures. The term Christian, derived from Christ, has been in use since the first century.
