"The Music of This Sphere"
The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher (1974)
Context: The need to make music, and to listen to it, is universally expressed by human beings. I cannot imagine, even in our most primitive times, the emergence of talented painters to make cave paintings without there having been, near at hand, equally creative people making song. It is, like speech, a dominant aspect of human biology.
"The Music of This Sphere"
„Music is not a hobby, not even a passion with me; music is me. I feel what people get out of me is this outlook on life, which comes out in my music. My music is the last expression of all that.“
— Arthur Rubinstein Polish-American classical pianist 1887 - 1982

„Sing again, with your dear voice revealing
Of some world far from ours,
Where music and moonlight and feeling
— Percy Bysshe Shelley English Romantic poet 1792 - 1822
To Jane. The keen Stars were twinkling; reported in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, 10th ed. (1919)
„People used to say my music was too difficult or too obscure, and I never set out to be difficult or obscure. I just set out to write what I felt as honestly as I could, and I am delighted when other people feel a part of themselves in the music.“
— Leonard Cohen Canadian poet and singer-songwriter 1934 - 2016
As quoted in Los Angeles Times (24 September 1995)
„people's emotions are rarely put into words, far more often they are expressed through other cues.
the key to intuiting another's feelings is in the ability to read nonverbal channels, tone of voice, gesture, facial expression and the like“

Age and Death
„Our first appreciation of music comes through the sounds of the mother, especially her voice and her lullaby. Our earliest musical expression, of which speech is a part, is in a sense a duet with her. And later in life we should still be able to discern the voice of love in the music.“
— John Diamond (doctor) Australian doctor 1934
The Life Energy in Music, Vol. 1 (1981)
„Art gives me the freedom I don’t have when I make music. In music, you feel a connection to the voice and think about the person behind it. In art that's secondary.“
— Marilyn Manson American rock musician and actor 1969

— Angelina Jolie American actress, film director, and screenwriter 1975
„All of us have the privilege of making music that helps and heals — to make music that makes people happier, stronger and kinder. Don't forget: music is God's voice.“

„Our only quarrel with Socialism is, that it will not honestly admit that it owes its recent revival to the failure of universal liberty, and is seeking to bring about slavery again in some form.“
— George Fitzhugh American activist 1806 - 1881

„The over-publicized bit about expression (or non-expression) was simply a way of saying that music is supra-personal and super-real and as such beyond verbal meanings and verbal descriptions. It was aimed against the notion that a piece of music is in reality a transcendental idea "expressed in terms of" music, with the reductio ad absurdum implication that exact sets of correlatives must exist between a composer's feelings and his notation. It was offhand and annoyingly incomplete, but even the stupider critics could have seen that it did not deny musical expressivity, but only the validity of a type of verbal statement about musical expressivity. I stand by the remark, incidentally, though today I would put it the other way around: music expresses itself.“

„Music expresses feeling and thought, without language; it was below and before speech, and it is above and beyond all words.“
— Robert G. Ingersoll Union United States Army officer 1833 - 1899
„On music: "Scientifically, believe it or not, music drives everything, because music equals universe and universe equals music."“
— Vangelis Greek composer of electronic, progressive, ambient, jazz, pop rock, and orchestral music 1943
„Through instrumental music, I’m allowed to come up with musical ideas that allow the listener to create their own impression of my song. If you add lyrics about a girl in the song, the listener doesn’t have a choice of what the song is about, it’s told to them. My musical writings allow me to express anything. It’s easier for me to tell a story of something I’ve encountered this way then to verbalize it. And my feelings are explored more in my compositions compared to what I could ever say in a few sentences.“

„One of my biggest heroes in music has been David Bowie. He's said, `I'm going to be a painter now, or I'm going to do some films,' and his audience is very forgiving, because they understand him as an artist. Whether you agree or like the result, you respect that he's expressing his artistic feelings.“
— Maynard James Keenan musician 1964
