Przyszła poetka urodziła się jako córka kupca Johna Fowlera. Od wczesnych lat zdradzała nieprzeciętny talent do języków obcych i zainteresowanie literaturą. W 1647 roku poślubiła walijskiego parlamentarzystę Jamesa Philipsa. Utwory Katherine Philips przyciągnęły uwagę Henry'ego Vaughana.
