Jean Frédéric Bazille – francuski malarz impresjonista. Malował kompozycje figuralne, pejzaże, martwe natury i portrety.
Urodził się w Montpellier w średniozamożnej rodzinie protestanckiej. W 1859 r. podjął studia medyczne, w 1862 r. przeniósł się do Paryża, gdzie kontynuował naukę w pracowni Charlesa Gleyre`a. Tam poznał Renoira. Po zdaniu końcowych egzaminów medycznych w 1864 r. zajął się wyłącznie malarstwem. Przyjaźnił się z Monetem, Sisleyem i Manetem, których często wspierał materialnie. Poległ w czasie wojny francusko-pruskiej w 1870 r. pod Beaune-la-Rolande.
Twórczość Baziille`a stanowi ogniwo pośrednie pomiędzy realizmem Gustave Courbeta a dojrzałym impresjonizmem, którego artysta nie mógł już współtworzyć.

Bazille meant the official yearly Paris Salon which excluded and refused many artists of the circle of the Impressionists; in 1869 an attempt to reinstate the Salon des Refusés was in progress; and even the older painters like Daubigny, Corot, Courbet, Diaz promised their support and to contribute their art in the alternative Salon
