Uważany jest za autorytet z zakresu prawa międzynarodowego, a także nosi miano „Ojca Prawa Narodu”. Rozwinął koncepcję międzynarodowych „zwyczajów zwyczajowych”, dziś definiowaną jako prawo zwyczajowe.
