Stanisław Herman Lem lengyel science fiction-író. Könyvei 41 nyelven, több mint 27 millió példányban keltek el. Egykor ő volt az egyik legolvasottabb nem angol nyelven író sci-fi-szerző a világon. Munkáiban gyakran bocsátkozik filozófiai spekulációkba a technológiáról, az intelligencia természetéről, a kétoldalú kommunikáció és a kölcsönös megértés nehézségeiről vagy az emberi korlátokról és az emberiség világegyetemben elfoglalt helyéről. Témáit néha fikcióként mutatja be, elkerülve ezzel mind a tudományos élet buktatóit, mind a tudományos stílus korlátait, máskor azonban az esszé vagy filozófiai könyv műfaját választotta.
