Murakami Haruki japán író és műfordító. Könyvei és történetei Japánban és nemzetközileg is bestsellerek voltak, munkáit több mint 50 nyelvre fordították le és több millió példányt adtak el belőlük külföldön is. Számos díjat kapott Japánban és nemzetközi szinten, többek között a World Fantasy Award és a Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award díjat. Egyik műve például a Franz Kafka-díjat és Jeruzsálemi Díjat kapott.

Murakami legjelentősebb művei közé tartozik az A "Wild Sheep Chase" , "A norvég erdő" , a "Kurbli madár krónikái" , A "Kafka a tengerparton" és az "1Q84" . Ő fordított le a angolról japánra amerikai írók munkáit mint Raymond Carver és J. D. Salinger. Gyakran szürrealista és melankolikus vagy fatalisztikus, melyet az "elidegenedés és magány" visszatérő témáinak kafkai műve jellemez. A posztmodern irodalomban is fontos szerepet játszik.
