Thomas Lanier Williams III, dit Tennessee Williams, né le 26 mars 1911 à Columbus dans le Mississippi aux États-Unis et mort le 25 février 1983 à New York, est un dramaturge et écrivain américain dont de nombreuses œuvres furent portées au cinéma. Aux côtés d'Eugène O'Neill et Arthur Miller, il est considéré comme l'un des dramaturges les plus importants du XXe siècle aux États-Unis.

Après des années dans l'obscurité, il devient soudain populaire avec La Ménagerie de verre , qui donne à voir une famille semblable à la sienne, malheureuse et de basse condition. Cette pièce ouvre une période de succès, incluant Un tramway nommé Désir , La Chatte sur un toit brûlant et Doux oiseau de jeunesse . Les travaux de la fin de sa vie attestent d'un style nouveau qui ne plut pas au public, et sa dépendance à l'alcool et la drogue influence sa créativité. Sa pièce Un tramway nommé Désir est souvent incluse dans la liste des toutes meilleures pièces américaines du XXe siècle. Wikipedia
