Habib Bourguiba citations

Habib Bourguiba , de son nom complet Habib Ben Ali Bourguiba, né probablement le 3 août 1903 à Monastir et mort le 6 avril 2000 dans la même ville, est un homme d'État tunisien, président de la République entre 1957 et 1987.

Avocat formé en France dans les années 1920, il revient en Tunisie pour militer dans les milieux nationalistes. En 1934, à l'âge de 31 ans, il fonde le Néo-Destour, fer-de-lance du mouvement pour l'indépendance de la Tunisie. Plusieurs fois arrêté et exilé par les autorités du protectorat français, il choisit de négocier avec la Quatrième République, tout en faisant pression sur elle, pour atteindre son objectif. Une fois l'indépendance obtenue le 20 mars 1956, il contribue à mettre fin à la monarchie et à proclamer la République, dont il prend la tête en tant que premier président le 25 juillet 1957.

Dès lors, il s'emploie à mettre sur pied un État moderne. Parmi les priorités de son action politique figurent le développement de l'éducation, la réduction des inégalités entre hommes et femmes, le développement économique et une politique étrangère équilibrée, ce qui en fait une exception parmi les dirigeants arabes. Ceci n'empêche pas le développement d'un culte de la personnalité autour de sa personne — il porte alors le titre de « Combattant suprême » — et l'instauration d'un régime de parti unique pendant une vingtaine d'années. La fin de sa présidence, marquée par sa santé déclinante, la montée du clientélisme et de l'islamisme, se conclut par sa destitution, le 7 novembre 1987, à l'initiative de son Premier ministre Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali.

Installé après sa destitution dans une résidence à Monastir, il meurt le 6 avril 2000 et repose dans le mausolée qu'il s'était fait construire. Wikipedia
