Aretha Louise Franklin, née le 25 mars 1942 à Memphis et morte le 16 août 2018 à Détroit , est une chanteuse auteure-compositrice américaine de gospel, soul, funk, rhythm and blues et jazz, et musicienne surnommée « The Queen of soul » ou encore « Lady Soul ».

Elle a vendu 75 millions de disques et reste aujourd'hui l'artiste féminine ayant vendu le plus de disques vinyles dans l'histoire de l'industrie discographique. Elle est en 1987 la première femme à intégrer le Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. En 2010, le magazine Rolling Stone la place première au classement des meilleurs chanteurs de tous les temps.

Her music was deepened by her connection to the struggles and the triumphs of the African American experience growing up in her father’s church, the community of Detroit, and her awareness of the turmoil of the South.
