Barbados Joe Walcott Quotes

Joe Walcott, also known as Barbados Joe Walcott to distinguish him from the more contemporary American boxer known by the same name, was a Barbadian born boxer who fought from 1890 to 1911, and was the World Welterweight Champion from 1901-6. His manager was Tom O'Rourke. Walcott, who stood 5'1½" tall, was a formidable fighter with exceptional power to his punch. In evidence, his wins were an impressive 60% by knockout.

'Barbados' Joe Walcott was the idol of the more contemporary boxer 'Jersey' Joe Walcott, who took his idol's real name as his own ring name.

Barbados Joe Walcott Quotes

“Since no welterweight or middleweight will fight me I am compelled to go to the next class. Will any heavyweights fight me?”

Police Gazette Oct 13, 1900. Walcott issued challenges to Tom Sharkey, Gus Ruhlin and even champion Jim Jeffies, though they all declined.

“The bigger they are, the harder they fall.”

Some sources claim it was said first by Walcott http://coxscorner.tripod.com/walcott.html, but the English version of this ancient proverb is generally attributed to Bob Fitzsimmons, as documented in the Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs ( 6th edition, 2015, p. 26 https://books.google.com/books?id=LMGPCgAAQBAJ&pg=PA26).
