Paul de Tarse ou saint Paul , portant aussi le nom juif de Saul , est un apôtre de Jésus-Christ, tout en ne faisant pas partie des « Douze ». Il est citoyen romain de naissance et juif pharisien. Le Nouveau Testament le présente comme un persécuteur des disciples de Jésus jusqu'à sa rencontre mystique avec le Christ, vers 32-36, mais l'historicité de ces persécutions fait débat dans la recherche moderne, tout comme l'emploi du terme de « conversion » à son propos.

Au cours des années 40, Paul fonde plusieurs Églises dans le territoire de la Turquie actuelle, et effectue un deuxième voyage missionnaire en Asie Mineure et en Grèce. Dans les années 50 et 60, tout en poursuivant sa mission itinérante, il adresse un certain nombre de lettres à ces nouvelles Églises.

Ces lettres, dites « épîtres pauliniennes », sont les documents les plus anciens du christianisme. Elles représentent l'un des fondements de la théologie chrétienne, en particulier dans le domaine de la christologie, mais aussi, d'un point de vue historique, une source majeure sur les origines du christianisme.
