Laisenia Qarase citations

Laisena Qarase est un homme politique fidjien de tendance nationaliste indigène. Il dirige le principal parti de droite, le Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua , dont il est le fondateur.

Éduqué à l'Université d'Auckland, il devient gérant de la Development Bank de 1983 à 1998, puis de la Merchant Bank of Fiji de 1998 à 1999. Il se lance ensuite en politique, et devient sénateur.

En juillet 2000, Laisenia Qarase est nommé premier ministre des îles Fidji, à la tête d'un "gouvernement de transition", en pleine période de crise politique. En effet, le premier ministre démocratiquement élu, Mahendra Chaudhry, est tenu en otage depuis mai par un extrémiste nationaliste, George Speight.

En 2001 ont lieu des élections législatives, remportées par le SDL: Qarase conserve son poste de premier ministre. Il est réélu en 2006.

Lors du coup d'État militaire de décembre 2006, Laisenia Qarase est destitué par le chef des armées Frank Bainimarama et remplacé par Jona Senilagakali. Il est transporté avec son épouse vers leur île natale, Vanuabalavu, dans l'est de l'archipel. En octobre 2007, Qarase demande aux tribunaux de se prononcer sur la légalité du coup d'Etat de 2006.

En août 2012, Qarase est condamné par la Haute Cour à un an de prison pour actes de corruption commis alors qu'il était au pouvoir. Après huit mois de prison, il est libéré début avril 2013.
