John Napier , né en 1550 et mort le 4 avril 1617, est un théologien, physicien, astronome et mathématicien écossais.

Fils aîné d'Archibald Napier et de Janet Bothwell, il est issu d’une riche famille, lui-même baron de Merchiston. Il se fait connaître par sa défense du protestantisme. Il met notamment en garde le roi Jacques VI d'Écosse contre les visées du roi catholique Philippe II d'Espagne.
