Gregory Bateson est un anthropologue, psychologue, épistémologue américain. Influencé par la cybernétique, la théorie des groupes et celle des types logiques, il s'est beaucoup intéressé à la communication , mais aussi aux fondements de la connaissance des phénomènes humains.
