“I turned to Alex. 'Hey, are you female today?'

My expression must have been priceless.
Alex burst out laughing. 'I'm kidding. Yes, I'm female today. She and her.”

“Amy gritted her teeth. "King Louis XVI even put Franklin's picture on a chamber pot!"
Jonah looked at his dad. "Do we have souvenir chamber pots?"
"No." His dad whipped out his phone. "I'll make the call.”

“Jason looked like her was trying to figure out an equation. "Let me get this straight. Your table ran away… because you polished him with windex.”

“The whole campfire idea freaked Piper out. It made her think of that huge purple bonfire in the dreams, and her father tied to a stake.
What she got instead was almost as terrifying: a sing-along.”

“Liz cleared her throat. "Isn't there a more polite term we're supposed to use nowadays? Like…. little person, or vertically challenged, or-"
"I'm not going to call myself the god of vertically challenged people," Bes grumbled. "I'm a dwarf!”

“But she laced her fingers through mine. I remember what she’d told me in New York, about building something permanent, and I thought-just maybe-we were off to a good start.”

“What about King Tut’s tomb?” I protested.
“That boy king?” Zia rolled her eyes. “Boring. You should see some of the good tombs.”

“I can see hope inside it."

Rachel ran her fingers over the ceramic designs.

"So fragile.”

“You set us up!”
“No! I swear—” Her face fell. “Mel. Mel must’ve told him.”
“Right,” I grumbled. “Blame Mel.”

“Grand buildings made her feel better--maybe because being in a place so permanent made her feel more permanent.”

“Zoë threw up her hands in exasperation. "I hate this language. It changes too often!”
