Gemma Chan is an English actress. She studied law at Worcester College, Oxford before choosing to pursue a career in acting, enrolling at the Drama Centre London. Chan's early work include supporting roles on television such as Doctor Who , Sherlock , Secret Diary of a Call Girl , and Bedlam as well as minor parts in independent films such as Exam , Submarine and Belles Familles . Chan starred in the National Theatre's production of David Henry Hwang's play Yellow Face and in the West End's revival of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming .
Chan had minor roles in the films Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit , Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Transformers: The Last Knight . She gained recognition for her roles in Crazy Rich Asians and Disney's animated film Raya and the Last Dragon . In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chan portrayed Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel before headlining Eternals as Sersi. In television, she starred in the Channel 4 science fiction series Humans .
