William Faulkner Nobel-díjas amerikai író, egyike a 20. század legnagyobb hatású irodalmi nagyjainak. Tekintélyét regényei, novellái, versei, filmforgatókönyvei és újító írói stílusa alapozták meg. Mivel legtöbb műve Mississippi államban játszódik, úgy tekintik, mint a Déli irodalom egyik legfontosabb képviselőjét. Ezek közé tartozik Mark Twain, Robert Penn Warren, Flannery O'Connor, Truman Capote, Eudora Welty és a színdarabíró Tennessee Williams. Bár munkáit rendszeresen publikálták az 1920-as évek közepe óta, Faulkner viszonylag kevéssé volt ismert. Ma már a legnagyobb amerikai írók közé sorolják.1949-ben irodalmi Nobel-díjat kapott a „...modern amerikai irodalomban megteremtett erőteljes és egyedi művészi stílusáért”. Wikipedia
