Kálvin János , francia származású svájci reformátor, keresztény tudós, a kálvinizmus névadója, Bamber Gascoigne szerint „a legnagyobb elme és a legjobb szervező” a reformáció vezéralakjai között, aki megteremtette Genfben az „istenfélő város tökéletesen működő prototípusát”. Elsősorban teológiai és egyházszervezői munkássága miatt nevezetes, de fontos szerepet játszott a francia irodalmi nyelv kialakulásában is. Huszonhat éves korában írt fő műve, amelyet aztán egész életében bővített és átdolgozott, az Institutio Christianae religionis , illetve az általa felállított genfi egyházszervezet Európa-szerte mintaként szolgált a református egyházak megalakulásához. A vallástörténeti szemponton túlmenően Kálvin azzal is hatott a nyugati kultúrára, hogy megváltoztatta a munkaszemléletet, ideológiai alapot biztosítva a kapitalizmus fejlődéséhez. Wikipedia
