Wiliam James és John Dewey mellett Peirce a pragmatizmus meghatározó teoretikusa. Ezen kívül a modern szemiotika megalapítója. Bertrand Russell szerint ő a legkiemelkedőbb amerikai gondolkodó, Karl Popper szerint pedig "minden idők egyik legnagyobb filozófusa".
