Considéré comme le père fondateur de la théorie des coûts de transaction et lauréat du prix de la Banque de Suède en sciences économiques en mémoire d'Alfred Nobel en 1991, il fait partie des économistes qui ont fait naître l'économie des institutions et les théoriciens de l'analyse économique du droit se référent souvent à ses écrits sur la création de ce courant.
