Robert Penn Warren, né le 24 avril 1905 à Guthrie et mort le 15 septembre 1989 à Stratton , est un écrivain américain.

C’est l'un des fondateurs de la Nouvelle Critique . Il est également membre fondateur de la Fellowship of Southern Writers . En 1935, avec Cleanth Brooks, il crée la revue littéraire The Southern Review. Il reçoit en 1947 le Prix Pulitzer du roman pour son plus célèbre roman Les Fous du roi , puis le Prix Pulitzer de la poésie en 1957 et 1979. Il est le seul homme de lettres à avoir été récompensé dans ces deux catégories.

En 1957, il est lauréat du prix de Rome américain en littérature. Wikipedia

“I know that any discussion of the relation of this poem to its historical materials is, in one perspective, irrelevant to its value; and it could be totally accurate as history and still not worth a dime as a poem. I am trying to write a poem, not a history, and therefore have no compunction about tampering with non-essential facts.
