Hafez el-Assad , né le 6 octobre 1930 à Qardaha et mort le 10 juin 2000 à Damas, est un militaire et homme d'État syrien.

Après son accession au pouvoir à la suite d'un coup d'État en 1970, il est président de la République jusqu'à sa mort en 2000. Son fils, Bachar, lui a succédé.

Son régime fortement autoritaire, structuré autour du parti unique du Baas, a mis en place un contrôle de l'ensemble de la vie politique syrienne. Il a conféré une stabilité à un pouvoir politique syrien marqué jusque-là par les coups d'État et a fait de la Syrie un acteur incontournable du Moyen-Orient. Wikipedia
