Edmond Halley est un astronome et ingénieur britannique.

Ingénieur et scientifique pluridisciplinaire, il est surtout connu pour avoir été le premier à avoir déterminé la périodicité de la comète de 1682, qu'il fixa par calcul à 76 ans environ. Lors du retour de cette comète en 1758, elle fut baptisée de son nom. C'est l'une des rares comètes qui portent un autre nom que celui de leur découvreur.
