Audrey Hepburn [ˈɔːdɹi ˈhɛpˌbɜːn] — nom de scène d'Audrey Ruston — est une actrice britannique, née le 4 mai 1929 à Ixelles et morte le 20 janvier 1993 à Tolochenaz .
Alors qu'elle se destinait initialement à la danse, avant de rejoindre le théâtre à la fin des années 1940, le succès de la pièce Gigi à Broadway lui ouvre les portes du cinéma. En 1954, à seulement 24 ans, on lui décerne l'Oscar de la meilleure actrice pour Vacances romaines.
À quatre autres reprises, elle est nommée aux Oscars, notamment pour Diamants sur canapé . Parmi ses autres grands succès il faut citer Sabrina et Ariane de Billy Wilder, la comédie musicale culte My Fair Lady de George Cukor et Guerre et Paix d'après le roman de Léon Tolstoï.
Après 1967, elle met fin à sa carrière d’actrice pour se consacrer à l'aide humanitaire à l'enfance. Elle multiplie les voyages en Afrique et en Amérique latine pour l'UNICEF, dont elle devient ambassadrice en 1988.
Audrey Hepburn est considérée comme l'une des plus grandes actrices hollywoodiennes des années 1950 et 1960. Aux antipodes des pulpeuses vedettes de cinéma de l'époque, elle incarne un nouveau glamour, plus raffiné : silhouette gracile, visage fin, yeux de biche, sourire malicieux. En 1999, l'American Film Institute lui décerne le titre de troisième plus grande actrice de films américains de tous les temps, derrière Katharine Hepburn — avec laquelle elle n'a aucun lien de parenté — et Bette Davis. There is therefore no way I can thank you for this beautiful award without thanking all of them, because it is they who helped and honed, triggered and taught, pushed and pulled, dressed and photographed — and with endless patience and kindness and gentleness, guided and nurtured a totally unknown, insecure, inexperienced, skinny broad into a marketable commodity. I am proud to have been in a business that gives pleasure, creates beauty, and awakens our conscience, arouses compassion, and perhaps most importantly, gives millions a respite from our so violent world. Contexte: People associate me with a time when movies were pleasant, when women wore pretty dresses in films and you heard beautiful music. This passage and slight variants of it have been widely attributed to Audrey Hepburn long after her death (for example, in Glamour March 2012, page 78); but no evidence of its existence has been found during Hepburn’s lifetime, attributed to Hepburn or anyone else. It has not been found in print before 2008.
