“That night, at God knows what hour, Bill phoned me up and shouted, I told him, and put the phone down.”

“I tried out that Buckethead guy. I met with him and asked him to work with me but only if he got rid of the fucking bucket. So I came back a bit later and he's wearing this green fucking Martian's-hat thing. I said, 'Look, just be yourself!' He told me his name was Brian, so I said that's what I'd call him. He says, 'No one calls me Brian except my mother.' So I said, 'Pretend I'm your mum then!' I haven't even got out of the room and I'm already playing fucking mind games with the guy. What happens if one day he's gone and there's a note saying, 'I've been beamed up?”

“The biggest thing has been realizing how much people really do love the early Sabbath music. People have said it in the past but I've never really believed them before. I remember years ago when Metallica opened up for me, I went backstage and they were playing old Black Sabbath albums and I thought they were taking the piss! They said, 'No, we really love Sabbath.' I couldn't see that at the time--because towards the end of my time with Sabbath 20 years ago I thought what we were doing was boring and stupid, because we were boring and stupid, totally sick of what we were doing and totally out of our brains with drink or drugs when we were playing it.”

“I keep hearing this [expletive] thing that guns don't kill people, but people kill people.”

“Hating people isn’t a productive way of living. So what’s the point in hating anyone? There’s enough hate in the world as it is, without me adding to it.”

Rajneesh (1931–1990) Godman and leader of the Rajneesh movement

“Sadness is silent, it is yours. It is coming because you are alone. It is giving you a chance to go deeper into your aloneness. Rather than jumping from one shallow happiness to another shallow happiness and wasting your life, it is better to use sadness as a means for meditation. Witness it. It is a friend! It opens the door of your eternal aloneness.”

Rajneesh (1931–1990) Godman and leader of the Rajneesh movement

“You feel good, you feel bad, and these feelings are bubbling from your own unconsciousness, from your own past. Nobody is responsible except you. Nobody can make you angry, and nobody can make you happy.”

Rajneesh (1931–1990) Godman and leader of the Rajneesh movement

“Life in itself has no meaning. Life is an opportunity to create meaning.”

Rajneesh (1931–1990) Godman and leader of the Rajneesh movement

“Sadness gives depth. Happiness gives height. Sadness gives roots. Happiness gives branches. Happiness is like a tree going into the sky, and sadness is like the roots going down into the womb of the earth. Both are needed, and the higher a tree goes, the deeper it goes, simultaneously. In fact, it is always in proportion. That’s its balance.”

Rajneesh (1931–1990) Godman and leader of the Rajneesh movement

“You don't know exactly who you are, because to know who you are you will have to dig deep within yourself through the whole rubbish that has accumulated in the name of personality.”

Rajneesh (1931–1990) Godman and leader of the Rajneesh movement

“Truth cannot be found by intellectual effort because truth is not a theory, it is an experience.”

Rajneesh (1931–1990) Godman and leader of the Rajneesh movement

“Why seek at all for a purpose?
If you seek this you will never find it because it is eternally hidden in the seeker.”

Rajneesh (1931–1990) Godman and leader of the Rajneesh movement

“Life is without purpose – life is its own purpose,
therefore he who lives without purpose truly lives.
Live! Isn’t living itself enough?”
